An open source device for operant licking in rats

چکیده
We created an easy-to-use device for operant licking experiments and another device that records environmental variables. Both devices use the Raspberry Pi computer to obtain data from multiple input devices (e.g., radio frequency identification tag readers, touch and motion sensors, environmental sensors) and activate output devices (e.g., LED lights, syringe pumps) as needed. Data gathered from these devices are stored locally on the computer but can be automatically transferred to a remote server via a wireless network. We tested the operant device by training rats to obtain either sucrose or water under the control of a fixed ratio, a variable ratio, or a progressive ratio reinforcement schedule. The lick data demonstrated that the device has sufficient precision and time resolution to record the fast licking behavior of rats. Data from the environment monitoring device also showed reliable measurements. By providing the source code and 3D design under an open source license, we believe these examples will stimulate innovation in behavioral studies. The source code can be found at http://github.com/chen42/openbehavior.

Characterization of mouse orofacial pain and the effects of lesioning TRPV1-expressing neurons on operant behavior
BACKGROUND Rodent models of orofacial pain typically use methods adapted from manipulations to hind paw; however, limitations of these models include animal restraint and subjective assessments of behavior by the experimenter. In contrast to these methods, assessment of operant responses to painful stimuli has been shown to overcome these limitations and expand the breadth of interpretation of ...
متن کاملRewarding Effects of Operant Dry-Licking Behavior on Neuronal Firing in the Nucleus Accumbens Core
Certain eating behaviors are characterized by a trend of elevated food consumption. However, neural mechanisms mediating the motivation for food consumption are not fully understood. Food impacts the brain-rewarding-system via both oral-sensory and post-ingestive information. Recent studies have reported an important role of visceral gut information in mediating dopamine (DA) release in the bra...
متن کاملSpeed and accuracy of taste identification and palatability: impact of learning, reward expectancy, and consummatory licking.
Despite decades of study, it remains a matter of controversy as to whether in rats taste identification is a rapid process that occurs in about 250-600 ms (one to three licks) or a slow process that evolves over seconds. To address this issue, we trained rats to perform a taste-cued two-response discrimination task (2-RDT). It was found that, after learning, regardless of intensity, the deliver...
متن کاملReinforcement of Drinking by Running: Effect of Fixed Ratio and Reinforcement Time.
Rats were required to complete varying numbers of licks (FR), ranging from 10 to 300, in order to free an activity wheel for predetermined times (CT) ranging from 2 to 20 sec. The reinforcement of drinking by running was shown both by an increased frequency of licking, and by changes in length of the burst of licking relative to operant-level burst length. In log-log coordinates, instrumental l...
متن کاملThe medial prefrontal cortex is crucial for the maintenance of persistent licking and the expression of incentive contrast
We examined the role of the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) in reward processing and the control of consummatory behavior. Rats were trained in an operant licking procedure in which they received alternating access to solutions with relatively high and low levels of sucrose (20 and 4%, w/v). Each level of sucrose was available for fixed intervals of 30 s over 30 min test sessions. Over several ...
